August is here! For most of America this means preparing for back to school, packing up the swimsuit and counting down the months until Christmas! But if you live in Florida swimsuit season lasts until Christmas (and beyond! Thanks global warming!)  I have spent the last few years not entirely excited about swimsuit season (did I mention it’s eternal?). But this year is different! Even though I’m not at my end goal yet, I am to my first big goal for my weight loss! 

In the last 8 months I have lost 44 lbs thanks to healthy eating and hitting the gym 5x a week! Those 44 lbs came of slower than ever before! There were times when I wasn’t seeing the satisfaction on the scale but was feeling it in my clothes. I’m glad I haven’t let the pace of my weight loss discourage me. It’s all been worth it! My goal is to lose at least 100 total lbs. I guess you can do the math but that will put me somewhere between 130 and 140lbs. 140 is the smallest I have been in my adult life but in retrospect, I wasn’t nearly as fit then  as I will be now.

The difference between then and now is mostly the eating. When I first started working out I reduced my calories, but I didn’t change my eating. I took more care in keeping the balance of fat/protein/carbs in line with a ‘caloric’ target but paid less attention to the sustainability of that kind of diet. Needless to say, I would always slip out of it. My second time hitting the gym, I wasn’t as crazy restrictive with the food, but I didn’t think about it too much either. If i was tracking calories I just grabbed some lean cuisines, or had a salad. I wasn’t in touch with my food. So eating right was just a battle between the “right” foods and the “wrong” foods. For the last 8 months I have been eating healthy! It’s probably the first time ever that I can say that! The balance is right, the calories are right and the food is out of this world!  I don’t consider this a diet. I don’t feel the burden of restriction which has always made me crave bad foods. When I eat things that are not really diet friendly, I eat them in moderation and scarcely and they don’t throw me off track.

It doesn’t hurt that my beloved is an amazing chef who takes our health seriously! He’s always impressing me with his ability to make delicious and healthy meals. I’m really happy that we can share this together.

My fitness level is at an all time high. I have been meaning to write a post about what I’m doing in the gym but haven’t gotten around to it yet. We change the routine every few months to keep it interesting. The last few weeks I have been focusing on cardio because I seem to have developed some triceps tendonitis, it’s mild but I’d like to ensure it doesn’t get any worse. I have been doing legs religiously and keeping the cardio going strong.

I have a lot further to go but I am proud of myself.  I always said that I get strong fast. I almost can’t believe it.

My quality of life has improved 1000% since this time last year. I’m doing things in yoga that I wasn’t able to do before, I’m sprinting up the stairs, and I’m with an amazing partner who gets me.  Life is great!

I’m hoping to lose another 30lbs by Christmas! Hopefully I will blog again before then 😉 .
